Baofeng UV-5R
« on: October 28, 2013, 07:31:01 AM »
I'm being gifted a Baofeng UV-5R. Does anyone know the best resource for someone who knows absolutely nothing about radio communications, where to start?

If you go the software programming route, download for free Chirp at http://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Home

Then either borrow or invest (yes I am using the word invest) a good usb to Baofeng programming cable. I went the cheap route and wasted $15. I did pick up a high end one for $40 (yes this was high but it was at a hamfest and I wanted to programmed a bunch of Baofeng HTs).

The Chirp software is great no issues at all as for the USB to Baofeng cables YMMV.

Thanks all. I'm getting my unit as a Christmas gift, but figured I would try to learn as much as I could ahead of time.

I just bought one of these, and the manual that came with it is terrible. Actually, if anyone is familiar with this radio and wouldn't mind helping me out, it would be greatly appreciated.

Special K posted the single-most-useful link there is on the Baofeng radio.

Here are a couple of related threads that have useful info:

The fella over at RadioMaster Reports has a list of SHTF frequencies. Many of these are useable by your Baofeng.  Might help get you off to a reasonable start.

Here's a great step by step I found indispensable.

http://www.brickolore.com/2012/03/baofeng-uv-5r-adding-repeater-to-memory.html

I love this little radio. Dirt cheap and I bought it for something to carry in the woods and not freak out if it dropped in the creek. Now I grab it for much more than that.
