I haven't used them but I'm going to order some to try out out for the can products we keep and still buy the disposable lids for canned products we give away. Thanks for the links

This might be a good thing to share on a bulk buy... perhaps on the regional boards? The minimum quantity of lids you can order from the website is 500 of a size.

Just a thought.

They do offer 36 count packs at the bottom of the order page.  For regular sized lids and rings it is 20.95 + S&H.  Wide mouth are $23.95 + S&H.

I have a lot of jars... (and I need more, too)... perhaps I'll bite the bullet and buy them in bulk!

I dunno - what I will probably do is buy the 3 dozen and try them through a canning season.  use them on some peaches (water bath; stored for almost a year), some jam (stored less than a year), some veggies, some meat, some stock (all pressure canned and stored for various times).  Just to see how they hold up under various conditions before I spend hundred of dollars on them.
If I like them, then I will fork over the money for 500....

I just bought some of these to test out - reusable canning lids.

http://www.reusablecanninglids.com/About_TATTLER.html

I've heard positive reviews from folks out in blogosphere.  If I like them I'll be thrilled to add them to my food preps.  I kept thinking about what would happen if I ran out lids.

I am glad you did bring them up.  reminded me that I was going to get some.  I am supposed to be starting my canning this week, and now I am upset at myself that I didn't get these for trying.  It is going to cost me $28 to get 3 dozen sent to me.
say, $1.50 a dozen of the reg lids..... 4.50 for 3 dozen.  so it would take 7 years for them to pay themselves off.  I wish I had found these 2 years ago when I had money to spend on things like this....

Yes the cost seems a little high.  I currently pay 1.99/dozen for the metal lids though I know there's cheaper source if you buy in bulk.  The convenience of not running out of the lids seems worth it..anybody else agree?

I have recently, as in a few days ago, bought seals.  I guess my $1.50 for a dozen seals is outdated - i bought some 60 dozen a few years ago for my "food storage", and still have most of them.  I had to pick some up for my SIL, though, last week, and wow - that was an eye opener!  $2 a box.   so, based on that info, it would take 4.5 years, or uses to pay for them.  after that, it is all "free."  That makes me feel better about it.  I think I will put them on my Christmas list.

I've now used the tattler lids in both water bath canning and pressure canning.  In another thread I commented that most of my unsuccessful seals were those jars with the tattler lids.  After the water bath canning session I finally contacted the company and here was their explantion:

I suspect the answer is related to how you are applying the metal bands.  Prior to processing in the water bath or pressure canner, you must tighten the metal ring only finger tight.  After removing jars from the canner, while still hot, tighten the metal band completely.  Following this process should eliminate your issues.

Our website has a tab entitled "Reviews and Blogs", which may offer additional insight from others who have used our product

Once I read this I realized that I had not been tightening the lids after pulling them from the canners.  So the unsuccessful seals were due to user error.  On my next batch you can bet I'll remember to tighten the lids after removing the jars!

Thanks for bringing these back up. I hadn't run across the other thread yet, and like many others have stated, I was wondering how many regular canning lids I'd have to stock up on to ensure that I had enough for any long term emergencies.

Thanks!

For anyone wondering about the composition of the rubber gaskets, I sent in an inquiry and Tattler responded saying they were "food grade nitrile" and that they contained no latex.

I wonder why you need the rubber rings to get a good seal?

Rubber's flexibility allows it to form around harder substances under pressure, which prevents leaks. Generally you would not be able to easily get a good seal where two inflexible substances meet. It's why they use it for gaskets in automobiles, seals around windows and so on.

Is this superior to the Ball/Mason jar method with the regular lids then?

I'm not sure I understand the question.

Standard canning lids from Ball, Kerr and others have a rubber gasket that helps seal the jar, but these lids can only be used once. I guess the Tattler lids are superior in that they lids and gaskets can be washed and reused.

We used these last summer in a water bath, and had great success. We intend on testing them with the pressure canner this year before we buy in bulk. After reading this thread and the link to the other blog I have high hopes for these in the pressure canner!

Hraz... the jars are exactly the same... the rings are the same. The only thing different is the reusable lids. They are actually a two-piece system with a plastic round disc and a rubber ring that fits around the rim of the jar. Looks like it would be a great things to have if/when you cannot get more of the regular disposable lids. Over time, they would really pay for themselves, too.

I haven't tried them yet (still have a pretty big stock of disposable lids), but plan to do it!
